Autumn Road Trip

If your summer holiday seems a long time ago now, then an autumn road trip might just be what you need before the dark, cold days of winter set in. It’s a truly stunning time of year and with half term upon us it’s the perfect opportunity to hit the road.

The LNK team have put together our round up of the best places to visit to see the UK in all of its Autumnal glory.

Scotland

Scotland was recently voted by readers of the travel guide, ‘Rough Guide’ as the most beautiful country in the world for 2019, beating New Zealand, Canada and Indonesia to the top spot.

And that’s particularly understandable at this time of year when its outstanding beauty is never more evident. Who needs New England in the Fall when we have the stunning landscapes of Perthshire much closer to home? This area is often referred to as ’Big Tree Country’ after all.

For a trip that showcases an abundance of Scottish countryside highlights, the RAC recommends starting your journey in Perth and continuing along the A9. They suggest stopping off at The Pass of Killiecrankie to take in the autumn scenes. The view along the pass from Garrybridge is reportedly one of the most photographed in Perthshire.

England

Exploring the Cotswolds by car is said to be one of the loveliest journeys in England. The region is frequently described as quintessentially English with its chocolate-box charm.

For the ultimate Cotswold views, travel from Broadway to Stratford-Upon-Avon through the villages of Willersey and Aston Subedge along some of the prettiest roads in the area. The Cotswolds are best visited on a roadtrip so that the traveller can take all the time needed to visit each village.

Wales

The best time to see autumn colours in Wales is said to be the last week of October and the first fortnight in November, with the autumn leaves sometimes lingering right into mid-November.

If you are a first-time visitor to Wales then the Dee Valley around Llangollen is a wonderful place to begin your travels.

For the best autumn views, the A539 on the northside of the valley is recommended. It can be reached by following the road that leads to the Pont Cysyllte Aqueduct which was awarded UNESCO World Heritage site status in 2009. The awe-inspiring landscape over the valley, Llangollen town and Dinas Brancastle is gradually revealed via the minor road off the A539 which leads to Offa’s Dyke National Trail.

Northern Ireland

The Causeway Coastal Route is generally regarded as Northern Ireland’s best road trip and Autumn is the perfect time to visit given the coastline becomes even more dramatic as the seasonal colours take hold.  As it’s easily accessible by car, this might be considered the ideal way to explore the 243 mile route from Belfast to Derry-or vice versa.

Featuring Dunluce Castle, Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge and the Giant’s Causeway along the dramatic coastline, this is a road trip which will not disappoint.
