Cars and Kindness – Random Acts of Kindness Day 2020

Let’s face it – most people’s lives tend to be busier than ever as we hurry from one thing to another. It’s all too easy to get caught up in the daily grind, focussing on whatever task we need to accomplish next and in the rush to get everything done, we can all be guilty of becoming absorbed in our own concerns.

On #randomactsofkindnessday2020, at LNK Motors we are thinking about ways we can spread a little kindness as we take to the roads and becoming a #RAKtivist

Not only will this make you feel like an all-round nicer person, it also provides a boost to the giver-firstly, by triggering the release of the feel-good hormone Oxytocin which has a protective effect on the heart by lowering the blood pressure.

Secondly, levels of Dopamine in the brain are increased resulting in a natural high-often referred to as the ‘Helper’s High’.

So it really is worth letting that driver out in front of you next time! It will literally do your heart good. Little things you can do today include:

Avoid cutting other cars off!

Overtaking then forcing your way into a small space is likely to irritate other drivers as well as being unsafe.

Use your indicators!

Signalling your intention is a fundamental aspect of driving which allows others to react smoothly in a hassle-free manner.

Remember other road-users

Pedestrians and cyclists have a right to use the road too. They will appreciate being shown respect at junctions and being given adequate space when passing.

Follow the two-second rule

Although it may be frustrating when the car in front isn’t going as fast as we might like, tailgaiting is aggressive and creates unnecessary pressure. Maintaining a two-second gap between vehicles demonstrates good driving practice.

Important as it is to be mindful of others on the road, have you considered directing some TLC towards your car itself?!

If we expect our vehicles to perform reliably then it stands to reason that we need to invest a little time in their maintenance.

Cleaning the Car

As well as improving its general appearance, washing the grime away will help prolong the life of your car. Tackling any dirt underneath reduces the likelihood of rust formation which can mean costly repair bills down the line.

Repair Minor Damage

Many of us don’t worry unduly about minor scratches or dints on our cars but over time these can create a general impression of scruffiness. According to Motoring Research, it’s often less expensive to have them repaired than we might think. Alternatively, there are DIY products available on the market which deliver excellent results.

Oil

It’s a job that’s often neglected but failing to check the oil level regularly can potentially cause terminal engine failure. Not worth the risk!

Lights

It’s crucial that our vehicles can be seen if we are driving in the dark. The consequences of having a headlight out could prove to be dire so checking the lights are fully functioning on a regular basis is a habit worth developing.

So, ultimately, whether it’s directed towards another driver-or even towards our own car-it’s clearly the case that no act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.
