Hints & Tips ! Did You Know ? 2021 Changes ....

The Ever Changing Motorworld !! Did you know ???

Mobile phone ban

We all know that mobile phones and driving don’t mix but laws are under review to make sure you keep your eyes on the road.

A legal loophole has been closed and you can now get six penalty points and a fine of up to £200 for holding a phone under any circumstances.

Brexit changes

If you’re dreaming of heading out into EU on a European roadtrip this summer, you’ll need to pack some extra paperwork. The good news is that – in most cases – you won’t need an International Driving Permit for post-Brexit travel. Horay !! But you will need to get a car insurance green card from your insurance provider.

Your green card will serve as proof that you have a valid insurance policy in place, and you’ll always need to keep a physical copy with you when driving in Europe. And if your car is less than a year old, you’ll have to carry your V5C logbook too.

Pavement parking could be banned nationally

Pavement parking is all too common on narrow streets where space is at a premium. But while it can help keep traffic moving and leave room for emergency vehicles, it comes at the cost of pedestrians, especially those with mobility needs and parents with prams.

A consultation on introducing a national ban took place at the end of the last year and the results are expected soon. It’s already banned in London where rule breakers face £70 fines.

Clean Air Zone - 1 June

Birmingham has launched its new Clean Air Zone from today with drivers of non-compliant cars forced to pay £8 per day to use the roads.

Larger vehicles such as lorries, coaches and buses will face a higher rate of £50 per day.

It is expected around 25 percent of cars which currently use the city's roads will be forced to pay the new fee.

However, some drivers can apply for temporary exemptions if they live or work inside the new charging zone.

The new scheme will be active 7 days a week, 365 days a year on roads situated inside Birmingham’s Middleway covering many of the biggest landmarks.

Drivers who fail to pay the charge will likely be issued a higher £120 fine.

Driving licence expiration - 30 June

Driving licences that expired between February and November 2020 were extended by 11 months last year due to the pandemic.

This means licences that were due to run out in August 2020 will now become defunct from July 2021.

Experts at Peter Barden have warned those who have a card expiring next month will need to renew their licence before the end of June to avoid being caught out.

Drivers are likely to be issued a £1,000 fine and between three and six penalty points for not driving with a valid licence.
