To save yourself from falling in love with a car only to find out that you can’t afford it, it is always sensible to identify a budget first, whether it is an upfront or monthly limit. Make sure you consider the cost of ownership, accounting for fuel, tax, insurance, maintenance and MOTs.

3    Choose a Fuel Type that Matches Your Usage

Diesel cars are generally more fuel efficient, returning more miles per gallon, but are more expensive to buy. If you plan to make regular, long journeys, they are a good option, but if you mostly use your car for pootling around town, petrol will probably be more cost effective.

4    Create a Checklist

Before you start your search, it is best to have a rough idea of what you are looking for. Consider your priorities and make a list of must-haves. If you have a large family, you will need more than four passenger seats, if you often go off road, you’ll benefit from four-wheel drive, and if you have a dog, you may want a big boot.
